Clean Streams in Action

Fonterra farmers around the country have been working hard to put the Dairying and Clean Streams Accord into action. While there’s still work to do, it’s great to see so many of our people making it happen. Here’s a snapshot of Fonterra farmers who’ve made on farm changes, doing their bit to create a more sustainable industry.

Andrew Hayes – Taupiri
Fonterra shareholder for 30 years. Farms 300 cows on 88 hectares.

“I’ve taken my fertiliser management to the next level with a whole farm environment management plan – a regime that’s allowing me to do more with less. I’m saving a whole lot of money on fertilisers and getting better pasture growth. It’s all about utilising what you’ve got on farm and making it work hard for you.”  READ MORE

Hans & Anita Nelis – Tirau
Fonterra shareholder for 25 years. Farms 500 cows on 185 hectares.

“We began planting and fencing eight years ago to protect our stock fromgetting stuck in waterways. What began as a project to fence creeks andstreams has turned into major planting job. We’ve planted around 10,000 native trees over the last eight years – that’s roughly three every day.”  READ MORE

Mark Muller – Hawera
Fonterra shareholder for 30 years. Farms 600 cows on 167 hectares.

“I want to make every part of our farm stays in good shape so it’s important that we keep the cows’ mess out of the creek. Replacing the old bridge not only helps with this but it makes us more efficient – we’ve sped up the daily walk to the milking shed and are doing the right thing for the environment."  READ MORE

Bryan Roach – Opunake
Fonterra Shareholder for 25 years. Farms 560 cows on 230 hectares.

“We invested in a new pond and irrigator system that essentially means I’m capturing nutrients and spreading it on the farm. The benefits include more production days, more grass and less fertiliser. It’s not rocket science – we should’ve done it years ago.”  READ MORE

Tony van Gool – Waituna
Fonterra shareholder for 10 years. Has a sharemilker on his 152 ha property farming 430 cows.

“We’re nine years into it and we’ve planted countless native trees, plants and bushes on more than five hectares of our farm. We need to look after what we’ve got to make sure it lasts. We work the land hard as famers so we need to make sure we’re giving back .”  READ MORE
